Body and Hair Care

Finding a good organic deodorant is tricky. There are many deodorant that claim to be natural but still contain harmful ingredients. Tom's of Maine is mostly natural but it's one of the main ingredients is propylene glycol. Not good. I have tried the crystal deodorants with little success. You have to be careful with the crystal if you are going to use it. Make sure it is a natural crystal and not synthetic.

Why should you wear natural deodorant? Although there is no concrete evidence, many of the ingredients in deodorant have been found in breast cancer tumors. Traditional antiperspirants contain aluminum. Aluminum is neurotoxic and can get into the bloodstream and brain. Again, while there is no concrete evidence, aluminum in the brain has been linked to Alzheimer's and hormonal disruption. So, just play it safe and go all natural.

Making your own deodorant is incredibly easy. After trying many different deodorants, I just started making my own.

Homemade Deodorant

You will only need two ingredients (coconut oil and baking soda) but may add in some extras if you like. If you live in a warmer area you may want to add 1 tsp of beeswax. Some great essential oils to add are orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, lavender or tea tree.
1/2 cup organic coconut oil
2/3 cup baking soda
1 tsp essential oils (optional)
Warm the coconut oil until it is liquid in a double boiler. Stir in the baking soda and oils. Pour into an old deodorant container or small jar. Refrigerate until solid.

Keep in mind that as you switch to a more natural deodorant it will take your body time to adjust. The longer you use it, the better your results will be. Good luck!
